St Helen’s Church Choir
St Helen’s has a mixed choir which supports the weekly worship and special services by “making a joyful noise unto the Lord” in singing of hymns, psalms, canticles, taize, responses and anthems. The choir is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music. Rehearsals are normally held each week on Thursday evenings at 7.00pm. New members are always welcome and an ability to read music is not essential. If you enjoy singing then come and join us.
I have been playing the church organ for over 33 years. I have never had any organ lessons but as a child I did learn the piano and studied up to grade 6.
I began playing as organist at a church in Lincolnshire and I moved to Lancashire in November 1996 and have been playing the organ at St Michael’s on Wyre for many years.
I have played at St Helen’s on several occasions in the past as I covered for holidays, funerals and weddings and so when the previous organist retired It was only natural that I should take on the responsibility for the future.
Helen’s Church Choir is inviting all singers of 8 years and above, St male and female to sing with us at Christmas. Families will be especially welcome.
I know that Christmas seems a long way away, but we will be starting to practice at the end of September. So if you can sing a carol then please join us. You will be most welcome.
Our Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols will be on Sunday the 20th of December and will include traditional carols such as “O Come all ye faithful and Away in a manger”. The choir will sing other pieces, old and new such as “The Candlelight Carol” (Rutter), “Torches” (Joubert), “The boars head carol” and the military wives song “Wherever you are”. We also carol sing around the parish at Christmas, which is always good fun!
Paul our organist ensures that we have lots of enjoyment and cakes whilst we learn pieces together. Practices are usually weekly from 7.00pm to approx. 8.15pm every Thursday at St Helens Church, Churchtown.
